Melasma: Understanding, Managing, and Improving Skin Pigmentation

Those brownish spots on the upper lip, forehead, and cheeks are a common complaint among my clients—and for good reason. They don’t have a set shape, seem to show up out of nowhere (usually around age 30), and can be tough to control.

While melasma often calms down after menopause, dealing with it in the meantime can feel like a constant battle.

This hyperpigmentation happens because of an overproduction of melanin (the pigment that gives our skin its color) or hyperdilation of blood vessels. But figuring out why your skin is acting up is tricky, even for doctors.

What we do know is that certain triggers—like hormones, sun exposure, and even stress—can make it worse. That’s why mapping out the root causes is so important for finding the best way to manage it.

There’s no definitive cure for melasma (yet), and it has a nasty habit of coming back. But that doesn’t mean you’re powerless. The best results come from a mix of patience, commitment, and the right plan tailored to your skin.
