Let’s talk about Rosacea?

Rosie Petrillo Ame Skin Studio

If you’re one of the 14 million Americans dealing with red, bumpy skin caused by rosacea, you know that hot weather causes major flare-ups. Even here in the Northeast, where we enjoy a mild climate, the summers can heat up along with the humidity.

What is rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that typically occurs on the face, and it’s often described as a form of adult acne.

Its prevalent and most prominent symptoms include redness, in the form of blushing or flushing, caused by telangiectasias: dilated and broken blood vessels that are often accompanied by breakouts of small acne-like bumps and pustules on the cheek and nose areas.

It's a condition that typically comes and goes and appears in bouts of flare-ups that can be triggered by stress, food, diet, exercise, alcohol, climate, and other environmental and emotional factors. The cause of it remains unknown so triggers can differ for each person.

Tiny Facial Bumps

Most rosacea patients develop inflammatory bumps and pustules often on central face: nose, cheeks, and chin. Most people with rosacea will complain of burning sensation on the face. Many can also mistake this pattern of bumps as general acne due to the fact that the bumps are often pus-filled (like whiteheads). However, rosacea is very different pathogenically from acne, although anti-inflammatory treatments often prescribed by the dermatologist can be similar in nature.

Rosacea can leave a person feeling self-conscious and uncomfortable. Fortunately, understanding what triggers your flare-ups can help keep them at bay.

Here are some things you can do to manage your rosacea this summer:

Tip #1: Grab some shade

Simply avoiding the direct sunlight, especially during the hottest part of the day, can reduce your chances of rosacea flare-ups.

Sun exposure is one of the most common triggers for rosacea. To protect the skin, it’s best to avoid the sun during peak hours (approximately 10am to 4pm each day), always wear sunblock (SPF 30 or higher), and zinc oxide of at least 5% is the best way to protect the skin from the sun and reduce potential flares.

Tip #2: Stay hydrated

Staying well hydrated also helps you keep you cool. In the summer months, drink plenty of water to help prevent your blood vessels from dilating, which causes your rosy rosacea look.

Tip #3: Calm down

Stress can make your rosacea worse. Identify your stressors and avoid them this summer. But be prepared: it’s good to have some tricks up your sleeve in case you’re cornered in a stressful situation. Breathing exercises, yoga, and meditation can improve your ability to deal with stress so that it won’t affect your rosacea or your overall health.

Tip #4: Exercise

We hear all the time how important it is to fit regular sweat sessions into our busy schedules, but those with rosacea may find that hard exercise results in unwanted redness and flare-ups. This is because exercising increases your heart rate, causing increased blood flow to the skin.

This doesn’t mean you should avoid exercising with rosacea. Try limiting your outdoor exercising to morning or evening hours to avoid midday heat and sun exposure.

Tip #5: Skin care products: read the label

As people with rosacea have especially sensitive skin, what they apply directly to it can be major culprits of aggravation. Women, in particular, should be mindful of the skin care products and makeup they use.

  • use water-based makeup that’s fragrance-free and non-allergenic

  • avoid products that contain alcohol, menthol, witch hazel, and eucalyptus oil.

Additionally, rosacea individuals are more prone to perioral dermatitis, an acneiform eruption [skin condition] around the nose and mouth, commonly associated with excessive use of skin care products with too many ingredients.
