The Importance of Sunscreen, Part I: Why Sunscreen Matters for Healthy, Youthful Skin
With sunnier days on the horizon, it’s the perfect time to focus on skin protection.
I’m often asked about the best anti-aging products, and the answer is simple: sunscreen. The majority of skin aging, around 90%, is caused by UV exposure from the sun or tanning beds. Not to mention, overexposure to the sun can lead to more serious risks, like skin cancer.
Why Sunscreen Matters
UVA rays contribute to premature aging, wrinkles, and sun spots, and they can even pass through windows. On the other hand, UVB rays are more likely to cause sunburns, but they’re blocked by window glass. Many people believe sunscreen isn’t necessary on cloudy days, but both UVA and UVB rays can pass through the clouds and still damage your skin.
What Is a Tan vs. a Sunburn?
A tan occurs when your skin produces melanin to protect itself from UV damage, meaning your skin has already been affected. Sunburns, however, are a more severe form of damage, where the skin becomes inflamed due to overexposure. Peeling is your body’s way of shedding damaged skin cells to prevent potential cancerous growths.
Aging and Skin Cancer
UV rays can cause DNA mutations in cells, which may lead to the development of skin cancer. Even people with darker skin tones are at risk for skin cancer, although it may appear in less obvious places like under fingernails, palms, or soles of the feet.
UV rays also break down collagen and elastin, resulting in sagging and wrinkles. Have you ever noticed that some people appear significantly older than their actual age due to sun damage?
As we move into the Spring and Summer, it’s crucial to make sunscreen part of your daily skincare routine. Protect your skin from the aging effects and harmful effects of UV exposure. In the next post, I will discuss the different types of sunscreen. Stay tuned!
