The Importance of Sunscreen, Part II: Understanding the Different Types of Sunscreen

Now that we understand the importance of sunscreen in maintaining healthy skin, let’s explore the various types available and how to select the right one for you.
There are two main types of sunscreens: physical and chemical.
Physical Sunscreens: These types of sunscreens are my personal favorite. They are formulated with natural minerals, such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. They work by blocking or deflecting the sun's rays and start working immediately upon application. This makes them an excellent option for immediate protection.
Chemical Sunscreens: These absorb or scatter the sun’s rays and typically need to be applied 15-30 minutes before sun exposure to activate. Some people prefer chemical sunscreens for their lightweight texture, though they may cause irritation or clogged pores for sensitive skin.
I can recommend my choices to you, but I would much rather see you using ANY sort of sunscreen than not. Plus, the benefits of sunscreen far outweigh the possible problems, as the sun is proven time and time again to be the most harmful.
And what about spray sunscreens?
As for aerosol spray sunscreens, there are some things to keep in mind:
In order to get an effective, even coating, you will need a good 3-4 applications.
Spots are often missed if there is a breeze the spray drifts into the air and doesn't stick to the skin.
Also, if it's a chemical SPF which most spray sunscreens are, can we talk about inhaling those lovely chemicals? Mmm, no thanks!
Choosing the Right Sunscreen for You Picking the right type of sunscreen for you is a personal choice. If you have sensitive skin or are concerned about irritation, physical sunscreens might be a better option. On the other hand, if you prefer a lightweight, invisible finish, a chemical sunscreen may be a good choice.
One thing to keep in mind is the importance of reapplying sunscreen every couple of hours, especially if you’re sweating, swimming, or spending long hours outdoors.
(By the way, did you apply your sunscreen today?) :)
