What are vitamin C's benefits for skin?

Rosie Petrillo - Ame Skin Studio - Vit C

In short: everything.

For one, vitamin C promotes collagen production, which has the potential to thicken the dermis, diminish fine lines, and is essential for firm, youthful skin.

On top of that, vitamin C is an antioxidant, meaning it protects skin cells from damaging free radicals caused by UV exposure.

It also inhibits melanin production in the skin, which helps to lighten hyperpigmentation and brown spots, even out skin tone, and enhance skin radiance.

Finally, vitamin C helps to repair damage from sun exposure and collagen loss by encouraging healthy cell turnover and regeneration.

The antioxidant properties of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and its role in collagen synthesis make vitamin C a vital molecule for skin health.

Dietary and topical ascorbic acid have beneficial effects on skin cells, and some studies have shown that vitamin C may help prevent and treat ultraviolet (UV)-induced photo damage.

Traditionally, topical vitamin C products contain L-ascorbic acid, the “grandparent” form of the ingredient, but it is also famously unstable.

Many of us have experienced the too-quick yellowing of a formerly clear serum—that’s because when exposed to light and air, L-ascorbic acid is quick to oxidize, which leads it to become ineffective. And for some people, it can also lead to irritation.

But while L-ascorbic acid is finicky, the good news is, there are other forms of vitamin C that get the same job done without the stability issue.

That’s one of the reasons why I chose Image’s Vital C line of products. Their potent forms of vitamin C maintain their effectiveness and stability to deliver long-term, visible results.

How to use it

Apply vitamin C as a serum in the mornings — that is, after cleansing and before applying moisturizer and sunscreen.

I think the best vitamin C skin care products are serums because they are more effective at penetrating the skin barrier than, say, a cream or toner.

Then, be patient.

Most skin care products take time to start working, and vitamin C takes a little longer, even with daily use.

You won't notice any significant changes in your skin for six to eight weeks.

If you have sensitive skin, do a skin test first, as the high acidity can be irritating.

Ps: Do not mix vitamin C with a retinol or niacinamide because the pH levels are incompatible. If you want to use both, I suggest using Vit C in the morning & niacinamide at night (retinol always use at night).
