Let’s talk about dark eye circles?

Hyperpigmentation - Ame Skin Studio - Vit C

Stress, lack of sleep, and staring too long at a computer screen — all of these modern maladies will show up under your eyes, on those pesky dark circles.

The eye cream debate

There are two dueling factions when it comes to eye creams: the believers and the, well, nonbelievers.

Some women and men swear by patting expensive potions around their eyes twice a day with hopes of easing their fine lines, dark circles, and puffiness.

Others adhere to the notion that whatever they’re using to moisturize their face simply has to be good enough for their eyes, too. It can only help … right?

I wish there was a straightforward answer.

When it comes to eye creams, the answer seems to vary depending on who you talk to, which articles you read, and what you’re hoping to accomplish.

Simply put, most specialists believe there are certain issues that eye creams can help treat, but some concerns, no matter how much cash you spend, are unavoidable.

So … who needs eye cream?

There’s no question that the skin around your eyes is more fragile than the rest of your face. It’s best to be extra careful with it.

The skin around our eyes is some of the thinnest and most delicate, and is also subject to constant micro movements.

For this reason, I believe it’s better to use a specially designed cream or gel for the eye, as many regular facial creams or moisturizers may irritate the thin skin.

The fragility of the area also explains why it’s often the first part of your face to start showing signs of age.

It’s natural for our skin to become drier over time. Not surprisingly, a lack of hydration is also a wrinkle-causing factor. It makes sense that a specific moisturizer in this area appears to benefit dehydrated skin.

Some studies have shown that anti-aging eye treatments can, indeed, help improve under-eye smoothness and reduce the depth of larger wrinkles.

I can’t say [definitively that] eye creams really work — but I can say that certain ingredients work.

So which ingredients should you look for?

As we get older, our skin cells don’t reproduce as quickly, that’s where Retinol comes in handy—to help speed up the process.

Vitamin C and peptides are established ingredients with anti-aging benefits as well. These antioxidants can help protect against free radicals and they help to brighten and strengthen the skin.

And what about bags and puffiness?

If you have bags under your eyes, it might be hereditary. This means no amount of eye cream will minimize their appearance.

Bags and puffiness in younger people may also indicate a hereditary component.

Regardless of your age, bags and dark circles can begin as a result of inflammation triggered by UV exposure from the sun, free radical oxidation, stress, fatigue, and allergies.

Sometimes, adjusting lifestyle factors — including drinking more water or staying on a fixed sleep schedule — may help to improve these conditions a bit.

Puffiness is caused by micro vessels in this area that become permeable and leads to fluid accumulation under the eyes. This swelling usually subsides when the body reabsorbs the fluids, though this can sometimes require a few weeks of waiting time.

In the meantime, gently massaging your face, including the skin under your eye, helps to improve the circulation and drain the fluid buildup. You’ve probably heard the advice to pat your eye cream on gently in an upwards motion right?!

Can you devote 30-seconds to your eyes during your daily routine?

Here’s a simple lymphatic drainage massage you can do for eyes:

  • Using gentle circular motions with your index and middle fingers (no tugging or rough dragging), slide a circle around your eyes. This brings blood flow to the area.

  • Go outward along your eyebrows, then inward along the top of your cheekbones toward the bridge of your nose. Circle your eyes three times.

  • Then with your middle fingers, press firmly upward at the pressure points just under the brow bone on either side of your nose where your brows should start.

  • Then press firmly inward toward your nose, above the bridge, next to your tear ducts.

  • Massage your temples with your index and middle fingers to finish.

You can also do this massage tapping instead of sliding your fingers at any time of the day without messing up your makeup too much. Make sure to always be gentle along the delicate skin near your eyes to avoid damaging it.

For an extra relaxing experience, do this with some cold spoons or Cryo sticks.

“Eat your carrots, they’re good for your eyes.”

Let’s not forget the importance of healthy eyes!

As we age we tend to strain our eyes more and more and that also leads to wrinkles around our eyes.

Another reason why taking those antioxidant supplements (or eating more berries!) comes in handy

Here’s the best ones for your eyes

  • vitamin C 500 mg

  • vitamin E 400 IU

  • lutein 10 mg

  • zeaxanthin 2 mg

  • zinc 80 mg

  • copper 2 mg (taken to prevent copper deficiency caused by zinc)

Your best bet, no matter where you stand on the eye cream debate, is a healthy diet: eat right, take a multivitamin, and drink a lot, lot of water.

Get exercise, get enough sleep, and wear SUNSCREEN, okay peopleeeee?!!

Cheers!
